The Intersection Between Art, Science, and Community
Coffee is not only about art and science. It is also about Community.
Jacob Betts initially started going to coffee shops in college as a means to meet new people. In our conversation, he shared that he actually didn’t like the taste of coffee in the beginning. Over time, with the help of friends and stumbling upon places like Mad Cap Coffee, he started to acquire a taste for it, and began appreciating the art and science of the craft. Eventually he started working in coffee shops himself and has really moved into a deeper understanding of craft coffee. He has enthralled himself with all aspects of this discipline.

Outside of the technical, scientific, and artistic side of things, coffee has brought out another important aspect to Jacob’s life. Community. As passionate as he is about learning about coffee, his life has been enriched by the people that he gets to share moments with in the coffee shop. During my conversation with Jacob, I discovered how his Instagram handle (@theconcussedcoffeegeek) actually came about. Some years ago, Jacob experienced an accident that left him with a really bad head concussion. This led to months of rehab and recovery, and overall a really challenging and scary season of life.
“Part of the journey of healing, and learning how to be me again was going to cafe’s and having friends with me, and having conversations with them and working through a really difficult season of life. So many of those cherished memories from that time, were in cafes. Over a cup of coffee.”
It was incredible to hear his journey in discovering the love of coffee, and to learn about how this discipline not only transforms your outlook on the artform, but can also transform your personal relationships. Find the episode here, and listen to Jacob’s band, The American Hotel System.
